Japanese Keyword Research: Strategies That Drive Results

Japanese SEO Agency Team ·

The most expensive mistake in Japanese SEO is building a content strategy on translated English keywords. We have seen companies invest six figures in content that targets phrases Japanese users never type. Keyword research in Japan is a linguistic exercise, a cultural exercise, and only then a data exercise.

After mapping thousands of keyword clusters for clients across e-commerce, B2B, healthcare, and hospitality, we have refined a process that consistently uncovers opportunities competitors miss. Here is how we do it.

Why Japanese Keyword Research Is Fundamentally Different

English keyword research deals with 26 letters and space-delimited words. Japanese writing systems compress meaning into fewer characters, allow multiple valid spellings of the same concept, and blur word boundaries in ways that break Western SEO tools.

Consider the query for “SEO agency”:

  • SEO会社 (kanji + katakana abbreviation)
  • SEO 代理店 (katakana + kanji)
  • 検索エンジン最適化 会社 (full kanji expansion—rare in search but exists)
  • エスイーオー 会社 (katakana phonetic spelling—low volume but present)

Each variant may have different volume, difficulty, and intent. Treating “SEO agency” as one keyword loses the picture.

Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana Variants

Kanji (漢字)

Used for core concepts, nouns, and formal terms. Often the highest-volume form for established categories: 東京 ホテル, 税理士, 弁護士.

Hiragana (ひらがな)

Common for native Japanese words, grammatical particles, and softer phrasing. Users often search hiragana when unsure of kanji spelling or seeking casual results: しんじゅく らーめん vs 新宿 ラーメン.

Katakana (カタカナ)

Used for loanwords, brand names, and foreign concepts: マーケティング, コンサルティング, クラウド. Many B2B and tech terms live primarily in katakana.

Romaji

Latin script appears in searches for global brands, abbreviations, and younger demographics: “iphone ケース”, “aws 料金”. Do not ignore romaji variants for tech and fashion.

Research workflow for variants

  1. Start with your seed concept in the most natural kanji/katakana form
  2. Use Google Suggest (google.co.jp) and Related Searches to surface alternates
  3. Check volume for each variant in your keyword tool with Japan location set
  4. Group variants into clusters—one target page per intent cluster, not per spelling

We maintain variant spreadsheets for every core topic. A single landing page can rank for multiple script forms if content uses them naturally in headings and body copy.

Long-Tail Patterns That Drive Conversions

Head terms in Japanese are brutally competitive. Long-tail queries carry clearer intent and faster ranking timelines.

High-value suffix patterns

SuffixMeaningIntent stage
おすすめrecommendedConsideration
比較comparisonEvaluation
ランキングrankingEvaluation
口コミreviews/word of mouthValidation
料金pricing/feesDecision
方法how-to/methodInformational
やり方how to do (casual)Informational
とはwhat isAwareness

Combine core keyword + suffix to map the funnel: 東京 ホテル おすすめ (consideration) vs 東京 ホテル 予約 安い (decision).

Question-style queries

Japanese question words—なぜ (why), どうやって (how), いつ (when), どこ (where)—power informational content. Voice search and AI Overviews increasingly surface pages that answer these directly.

Geographic long-tail

Ward, station, and landmark modifiers shrink competition: 六本木 イタリアン 個室 vs 東京 イタリアン.

For local businesses, long-tail geo keywords often convert at 3–5x the rate of head terms with a fraction of the ranking difficulty.

Tools That Work for Japanese Keyword Research

No single tool is sufficient. We use a stack:

Google Keyword Planner

Free with a Google Ads account. Set location to Japan. Volume data is bucketed for low-volume terms but directionally useful. Excellent for discovering Google’s grouping of related terms.

Ahrefs or Semrush

Essential for difficulty scoring, SERP analysis, and competitor keyword gaps. Set the database to Japan. Verify that the tool captures Japanese characters correctly in exports—encoding issues still occur.

Google Search Console

Your best source of truth for queries you already rank for. Mine GSC for:

  • High-impression, low-CTR queries (title/meta optimization opportunities)
  • Position 8–20 queries (quick win content expansions)
  • Unexpected variant spellings users actually employ

Compare variant interest over time. Spot seasonality—critical for retail, travel, education, and event-based businesses.

Answer the Public / AlsoAsked

Surface question clusters around seed keywords. Cross-reference with Japanese Suggest because Western question tools miss nuance.

Native platform tools

Yahoo! Japan Keyword Assistant, Rakuten insights for e-commerce, Amazon Japan search suggest for product terms. Meet users where they search.

Manual SERP analysis

Tools cannot replace opening an incognito window on google.co.jp and searching your target keyword. Note: ad density, local pack presence, featured snippet format, video carousel, dominant content types, and which script forms appear in top results.

Intent Mapping: From Keywords to Content Architecture

Keyword lists without intent mapping produce random blog posts. We categorize every keyword into intent buckets before assigning URLs.

Intent categories

  1. Informational — user wants to learn: とは, 方法, 意味
  2. Navigational — user wants a specific brand or site
  3. Commercial investigation — user compares options: おすすめ, 比較, ランキング, 口コミ
  4. Transactional — user ready to act: 申込, 予約, 購入, 料金, 見積もり

Mapping exercise

Create a spreadsheet with columns: keyword, variant group, volume, difficulty, intent, current ranking URL, target URL, content type, priority.

Assign one primary intent per page. Mixing informational and transactional on the same URL dilutes relevance. A guide titled “What is XX” should not also push hard for purchase—that is a separate landing page linked from the guide.

Funnel alignment

Map keywords to buyer journey stages:

  • Awareness: broad informational, problem-aware queries
  • Consideration: comparison, best-of, review queries
  • Decision: pricing, signup, contact, location-specific queries

Content production priorities follow revenue impact. Decision-intent keywords get commercial pages first. Awareness content builds authority over time.

Competitive Gap Analysis

Identify 3–5 competitors ranking for your target topics on Google.co.jp. Export their ranking keywords. Filter for:

  • Terms they rank top 10, you rank outside top 50
  • Terms with commercial intent you have no page for
  • Long-tail variants they capture through comprehensive content

Analyze their top pages: word count, structure, media, schema, backlink profile. Do not copy—identify what query elements their content satisfies that yours does not.

Japanese competitors often win through depth and freshness rather than technical tricks. A 4,000-word guide updated quarterly beats a 500-word stub—even if the stub has better domain authority.

Putting Research Into Action

Keyword research is not a one-time project. Search behavior shifts with seasons, platforms, and culture. Revisit clusters quarterly.

Execution checklist:

  1. Consolidate variant groups into topic clusters
  2. Assign one intent and one URL per cluster
  3. Build content briefs with target keywords, related variants, SERP format notes, and required sections
  4. Publish, then monitor GSC for new query impressions within 4–6 weeks
  5. Expand pages that gain traction; prune or merge pages that do not index or impress

The teams that win in Japan treat keyword research as ongoing intelligence—not a slide deck that gathers dust after kickoff. Start with ten seed keywords in proper Japanese, map every script variant, classify intent, and check the SERP.
